The component quality is decent, though the art is very old school. Wanted a new game for my sister and her husband. Bought this without playing first And although at first it seems overwhelming, once you learn to at it's really quite simple.
Continues to be a favorite This is the kind of games I really like, a lot of ways to make points I have read many reviews of this game and have discovered that it is what I was expecting - a good game.
I like playing the game with three or four players but the game does play well with just two. If you like euro games with some area control and decision making, you need to give this game a chance.
To be clear, I'm a big fan of Stefan Feld's games. Macao is an interesting game which uses a unique windrose mechanic, and requires players to plan carefully for future turns, and has just the right amount of randomness to keep things interesting.
Highly recommend. This game was fun for people who like deeper games and those who usually like more casual games. All groups seemed to agree on it.
The dice system is random but helps make sure nobody gets screwed by bad dice rolls. I wish the box would keep all pieces organized.
Even just a bag for each kind of piece. That has nothing to do with game play so it still gets my 5 stars. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
Macao is a board game by Stefan Feld. Feld has become a rather prolific designer with several well-known games to his credit in the last few years.
The theme of the game is that the players represent traders in the Portuguese free port of Macao, trading in goods to earn prestige points in order to win the game.
The game takes place over 12 rounds and at the end of the twelfth turn, once all prestige points have been calculated, the player with the most points will be the winner.
The central mechanic of the game is that most actions a player can take are driven by spending action cubes that are available in six colours.
View Larger Image. GAME SUMMARY. Designer: Stefan Feld Description: Macao, the mysterious harbor city on the south coast of China, is the Portuguese trading center in the far east at the end of the 17th century.
Macao is a development game, in which players need to plan their actions up to six rounds in advance. Players compete for goods which are shipped to distant countries as well as for development cards which steadily add new options turn by turn.
Cards are bought individually and allow for powerful combos which you need in order to win the game.
Check out " Macao " on BoardGameGeek. And yes, you have to take a card every round — including the last one.
Add it all up, and someone other than me wins. These are me, plus three fictitious players drawn from observing my friends and their respective quirks and play styles.
Luck is a big complaint from the haters, mostly around the resource cube mechanism. It just means you can never be sure of anything or ensure massive long-term strategic plans.
Know your groups and act accordingly. The theme and look of the game are also savaged. Sure, neither are original and the components are your old school standard cubes and discs.
Macao is an old, European gambling card game played with French playing cards that is related to Baccarat.
It was first mentioned in and may have originated in Hungary or Italy. Macao may be a forerunner of Baccarat. It is a gambling game using cards that resembles others of its genre such as Onze et Demi , Vingt Un , Trente Un or Siebzehn und Vier.
The idea of Macao is also used in a dice game of the same name, Macao. Noble Knight Games. Submit Price Link. Recent Prices. Upgrade to Premium.
This game feels like other Stefan Feld designs in that you end up so focused on scrambling to avoid penalties that you sometimes forget to actually try to score points.
The dice do provide some randomness, but since everyone uses the same dice and you can use dice "selected" by other players , it doesn't end up being biased.
Overall, the game is very tense, and trying to balance short-term and long-term objectives takes center stage. Played one game and probably won't be playing another.
Mechanically somewhat sound, but at the same time themeless, soulless and just plain boring. Also too long for what it is. Lots of fiddly cube pushing in the final turns.
The game masquerades as an economic engine game, but it really isn't one, since the resources you get as income action cubes are both random and transient.
Components are appropriately boring, non-descript, and hard to read. However, being coupled with the need to be able to combine specific colors on the same turn, the system falls down flat and makes planning almost impossible.
The system of getting harsh penalties for not activating your cards actually just seems to serve to straightjacket people into playing the game the way the designer envisioned.
I have never been a big fan of Stefan Feld's designs, and this game fits right in with most of the other ones: Thematically weak beyond belief, procedural, dry.
As long as alea seems to favor his games, they're a lost cause as far as I am concerned Each chooses any two dice not taking them and takes the numbers of action cubes of that color from the supply and places them next to the number matching the pips on the die on his wind rose.
However, if one or more players want to see what others choose before making their choices, the phase is played in the normal wall order. Example: the player rolls the dice 2 and 5 among others.
Each player who chooses these two dice, takes 2 red AC, placing them next to the picture of the 2 die on his wind rose, and 5 green AC, placing them next to the picture of the 5 die.
After the players take their AC, each rotates his wind rose one space in the clockwise direction. Thus, each of his AC move to a die with 1 fewer pip.
All other AC which are next to the dice spaces on his wind rose remain where they are, but are not considered part of his action cube supply and may not be used as such.
Note: if, after rotating his wind rose, the arrow points to a space with no AC, the player, as consequence of this, receives a punish marker, i.
Note: in the 3rd phase, such a player may have already activated cards that would enable him to place AC in the space next to the arrow on his wind rose.
In this case, he would then have action cube supply he could use see below. Of course, even without action cube supply, the player could use 3.
Players should try to use all their action cube supply, since the player must return any unused action cube supply not used back into the general supply at the end of the phase, i.
The player first on the wall begins and uses if possible his actions supply cubes to execute the following described actions in any combination and order.
Afterwards, the second player on the wall follows and does the same, and so on, until all players have taken their turns executing actions.
In order to use a card on his tableau, a player must activate it by putting exactly the combination of AC that are shown at the top of the card from his supply of action cube supply back into the general supply.
Then, he takes the card from his tableau and puts it in his play area; from now on the card is activated for the remainder of the game and may be used "free of charge" without limit including in the round it was activated.
A player may activate as many of his cards in his turn as he wants and has AC in his action cube supply to do so.
He can activate cards, do other actions, and then activate more cards, as he chooses. You collect cubes England Island Aufstellung upon the dice throw, and place them around the rondel, then you spend them on Stonis Garage cards if you have the right combinations Kizi Spiele colors. The object of the game is to make lucrative trade deals, expand influence in the city, and fill important offices and positions to score the most Prestige Points (PP). Macao plays with 2 to 4 players, however; I would recommend this game for 3 or 4 players. COMPONENTS The components are nice. The board is mounted on thin cardboard and colorful. When playing the game, the player that has one last card, cannot end the game with a 2 or 3 while playing in two, if the player has 2 cards which are the same, e.g 2 of spades and 2 of hearts, they calls double Macau, however if the other player holds a card that is also a 2 of diamonds, the first player has to take pick up 6 cards from the deck.
